RAMAKRISHNA MATH, PUNE

  • “The aim of the Sangha is to propagate the values, which Shri Ramakrishna advocated and practiced in his life to help others in their mental and spiritual development. Understanding that all religions are the manifestations of one eternal religion; the objective of the Sangha is to make an effort to establish brotherly feelings in the followers of different religions.”

    – Swami Vivekananda

Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission

Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission are worldwide, non-political, non-sectarian spiritual organizations which have been engaged in various forms of humanitarian, social service activities for more than a century. Inspired by the ideals of renunciation and service, the monks and lay devotees of the Math and Mission serve millions of men, women and children, without any distinction of caste, religion or race, because they see the living God in them.
The truths Bhagawan Shri Ramakrishna directly perceived and imparted to his disciples, broadcasting those truths to society at large and striving for the material and spiritual elevation of mankind are the Order’s basic goals. Once, while discussing liberation, Swami Vivekananda expressed his desire for personal liberation. Shri Ramakrishna, expressing his disappointment, said, “I thought you will be a gigantic banyan tree giving shade and comfort to the people”. Realizing the true import of his expression, Swami Vivekananda translated his Master’s wish by founding an organization, Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission, where people from all castes, religions, and economic & social strata are welcome.

Motto

ATMANO MOKSHARTHAM JAGAD HITAYA CHA, “For one’s own salvation and for the welfare of the world”. It was formulated by Swami Vivekananda.

Ideals

Work as worship, potential divinity of the soul, and harmony of religions are three of the noteworthy ideals on which these two organizations are based. It is this ideal of service to man as service to God that sustains the large number of hospitals, dispensaries, mobile medical units, schools, colleges, rural development centres and many other social service institutions run the twin organizations.

Our Emblem

The common emblem of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission is a symbolic representation of their ideology. It was conceived and sketched by Swami Vivekananda himself.  The meaning behind this emblem, in the language of Vivekananda himself:

“The wavy waters in the picture are symbolic of Karma, the lotus of Bhakti, and the rising-sun of Jnana. The encircling serpent is indicative of Yoga and awakened Kundalini Shakti, while the swan in the picture stands for Paramatman. Therefore, the idea of the picture is that by the union of Karma, Jnana, Bhakti and Yoga, the vision of the Paramatman is obtained.”

This symbol is the epitome of Swamiji’s message of harmony and synthesis, leading to life’s fulfilment.
